DIRECTOR OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
Molecular and Cell Biology and Chinese
It's been so exciting to see VHIO grow and evolve over the years - four years has not been enough! I don't know how to succinctly describe all of the ways VHIO has helped me grow. In the past, I've been described as being "most likely to be recognized by her sneeze" and also "most likely to steal dirt from a Han dynasty emperor's tomb." Please feel free to reach out if you want to grab boba with me (...Asha preferred)!

Hello! My name is Sheryl, and I’m a 4th year majoring in Toxicology. I’ve been in VHIO since my very first year at Cal, and it’s definitely been the highlight of my college experience! I’m from Boston, MA but the California weather, food, and friends are really winning me over. In my spare time, I love watching crime shows, cute dog videos, and rediscovering childhood cartoons.
Hi, I'm Zeyi! I'm a 2nd year intended Public Health major from Shanghai. I joined VHIO as a freshman and am now one of the Chinese Department Coordinators. Hello! I am a 2nd year majoring in Statistics. I joined VHIO during my freshman year, and I am now one of the Korean Department Coordinators. It is very nice to meet people who are of completely different majors from mine, as I to get to meet people I would not have been able to outside. I have really enjoyed my one year with VHIO, and I can't wait to meet new people and help bridge language barriers through volunteering events. In my spare time, I like to sleep and watch K-dramas—if I'm not drowning with school work.
Hi everyone! My name is Shaili, and I'm currently one of the Spanish department coordinators. I'm also a 3rd year majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology. I joined VHIO my sophomore year, and it has been such an integral part of my college experience -- I love being part of an organization with people from such varied backgrounds who are passionate about the same cause as I am! In my spare time, I enjoy singing, hiking, playing board games, and learning new things from others.
Hey y'all! I am super excited to be one of the two Spanish Department Coordinators this year. I am a Senior majoring in Integrative Biology, from a tiny town in NorCal that no one has ever heard of. I love dancing, especially purposely bad/dorky dancing, eating, and the telling people I have a dog named Moffitt. VHIO has been the highlight of my college experience and my only regret is not having joined earlier!
Hi my name is Liselle and I am senior, studying Molecular and Cell Biology - Genetics, Genomics, & Development. My co-coordinator, Carmel, and I revamped the Tagalog department when we were sophomores and now we are seniors! I enjoy anything that involves being outside like snowboarding, hiking, swimming at the beach. Make no mistake, you can always catch me watching Netflix in the middle of midterm season.
Hello! I'm Carmel and I'm a 4th year double majoring in Public Health and Microbial Biology. I'm one of the co-coordinators for the Tagalog department, which me and Liselle established as a new department during our sophomore year. In my spare time, I like to go on hikes, go to random classes in the RSF (my favorite one is Urbankick!), and try random new places to eat (I love yelping). VHIO has been a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy it as well!

Hello! I'm Izumi, 4th year majoring in MCB Neurobiology, and I am the co-coordinator of the newly made Japanese Department starting this semester! Even if it's not about these things, I am more willing than willing to meet new people. Favorite part of campus is the eucalyptus forest behind VLSB/LSA, I definitely recommend it!
SHI JIA ZHOU
Hello! My name is Shi Jia and I'm a senior majoring in MCB Immunology. I coordinate the Japanese department along with Izumi. Fun fact about myself, I'm Chinese born and raised in Japan, went to an international school, and holds a Singaporean passport. So I think I have a quite a weird background, but that's what makes me especially passionate about bridging language and cultures. We're a new piloting department, so I'm excited to meet you all and be apart of VHIO!
Hi everyone, my name is Jen! I'm a senior studying Public Health and Integrative Biology, and I'm VHIO's Outreach Coordinator. VHIO is a fantastic way of gaining clinical and interpretation experience while also making a real difference in LEP communities; I look forward to helping set up more opportunities for volunteers to connect with the community members who need our help most.
Beyond VHIO, I am passionate about and have experience in research (labs at UC Berkeley, UC Davis, NIH, etc), public health (local government internship) and mentorship. I have also always loved music and art, from playing the piano, painting and drawing to enjoying museums, galleries and symphony performances.
Feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
Hi everyone, my name is Nghi and I'm the finance coordinator for our club this year. I am a fourth year Integrative Biology major from San Diego, CA. CHAE RHIM LEE
Hi, my name is Chae. I am one of the education coordinators of VHIO this year. I am a third-year majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology with an emphasis in Immunology. I am from Irvine, California. Contrary to a popular stereotype of Koreans, I am not into K-Dramas (they are too much for me to keep track). Instead, I really like watching historical documentaries, eating, taking pictures of my foods, singing, hiking, and sleeping.
XIN (FRANK) QI
Hi everyone! My name is 祁忻, but for everybody's sake just call me Frank. I'm a 3rd year pre-med majoring in MCB-CDB track 2. VHIO has been a major part of my college experience since my freshman year, and I have found so many friends and opportunities in VHIO. When I am not busy with VHIO, I do research in a campus lab, volunteer as an EMT, and volunteer in the SFGH emergency department. I also sing, play guitar, and enjoy ice-cream more than I should. See you in VHIO and around campus!
VAN VIET THUY NGUYEN
Xin chào các bạn! Hi there, everyone!
My name is Van Viet Thuy Nguyen (she/her/hers), and I'm a fourth year undergraduate student at Cal, studying Public Health and Molecular & Cell Biology: Immunology and Pathogenesis. If I could, I'd love to major in psychology and minor in education, as well! It is an honor to be VHIO's first co-professional development coordinator this year, as well as co-Vietnamese language coach. I absolutely love listening, learning, teaching and telling, so I'm honored to get the chance to co-create spaces for that with all of you in our education workshops. I am a strong believer in the power of story telling and community building, and I can't wait to do that with you soon!
Wishing you a wonderful day,

I'm Pre-Dental and also very invested in health equity, so I'm also an Advocate in Health Leads, and I have experience working with community health centers. In my free time or when I have an overwhelming amount of stuff due, I like to watch TV shows (from Community to Naruto to the Office and more) to wind down. I've also spent a lot of time trying out new makeup & Asian skincare products along with my roommate (and your director!), Sheryl.
SENIOR ADVISOR/ PROGRAM ANALYST
Molecular and Cell Biology and Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology
I joined VHIO as a freshman in the hopes of using my trilingual skills to serve the Chinese immigrant community in the Bay Area. I was raised in San Francisco in an immigrant household and witnessed how many hoops immigrants had to jump through to access resources that were readily available to English-speakers. The generous volunteers who helped my family when we were in need inspired me to commit myself to community service. Being with VHIO for so long also taught me that the forefront of healthcare isn't just in hospitals and clinics, but also all the admirable efforts to educate and empower community members to make everyday healthy living choices.
In my free time, I like to watch Chinese dramas, sip on boba, and explore SF.
SENIOR ADVISOR / DIGITAL MARKETING COORDINATOR
Hello! I'm Kelly, and I recently graduated from UC Berkeley. VHIO has been such a wonderful platform for building connections with passionate peers and exploring issues in healthcare, culture, and community service. Serving as an officer and director in VHIO in the past allowed me a direct role in working with community organizations to provide service to patients and developing meaningful experiences for our student volunteers. I am excited to be involved in VHIO's continued growth. In my free time, I enjoy supporting Bay Area professional sports teams and over-analyzing sitcoms.
